SEMINARY NEWS!

Canon Ben Jones, Vice-Provost of St. Joseph’s is offering a course entitled Vocational Discernment for the Fall Semester, 2020, based on The Imitation of Christ by Thomas a ‘Kempis.  The Council of Bishops has decided that no man will be made a Deacon and no Deacon will be ordained a Priest until he has successfully passed Vocational Discernment for credit.

Both Archbishop Upham and St.  Joseph’s Provost, Bishop Ashman, would like to personally remind all clergy that “continuing education” is of supreme importance.  We too easily forget what we have learned.  We all need to learn what (perhaps) we didn’t learn.  We all need to sharpen our skills, especially our theological skills.”

OFFERINGS FOR FALL SEMESTER 2020 ARE:

1)  Continuation of the History of the Church and Development of Doctrine taught by the Rt. Rev. Peter F. Hansen, Bishop Suffragan of the Diocese of the Western States.

Bishop Hansen will be offering a two-semester course which will examine  elements of Christian History, the effect that the Church had on society, and the errors, inspirations, heroic tales, heresy and orthodoxy, that brought the promise of Christ: that the Holy Spirit would lead us into all truth, and how the Church developed its doctrine in that setting.  The first semester covered topics leading up to the brink of the Great Schism.  The second semester will cover the Great Schism, the Crusades, the medieval Papal States, the rise of the middle class, the Reformation, Anglicanism as opposed to both Roman and Protestant churches, and subsequent centuries and their challenges that continue until today.  Bishop Hansen’s course resumes TUESDAY, August 25th at 4:00 pm PDT and will run for fifteen weeks.  Please make time zone adjustments where necessary!

2)  Biblical Greek III & IV taught by The Rt. Rev. Donald M. Ashman, Provost of SJAATC and Rector of The Church of Our Saviour, Los Angeles, CA.

Biblical Greek III & IV will continue to focus on the rudiments of learning to read, write, and understand Koine Greek, the language in which the New Testament was originally written.  Bishop Ashman has arranged his busy schedule so as to offer this course for those students who would like to be able to read the original biblical language and understand the Scriptures more thoroughly for preaching.  Like Latin, Greek is a very valuable tool for those who are engaged with Holy Scripture.  Biblical Greek III & IV will resume FRIDAY, August 28th at 11:00 am PDT.  Please make time zone adjustments where necessary!

3) Vocational Discernment taught by Fr. Ben Jones, Registrar and Vice-Provost of SJAATC.  The Vocational Discernment Course is a combination of a prayerful, meditative foundation with a Christ-centered focus on the main Christian virtues of humility and redemptive self-denial.  The four books which comprise “The Imitation of Christ” by Thomas a ‘Kempis will be studied as a dialogue between Christ and His Disciples and will both test and define the Discernment of a Vocation to the Ordained Ministry.  “There should be a careful scrutiny and organization of both our inward and outward life, since both are essential to our growth.”  (Kempis; Book #1).  Vocational Discernment will begin MONDAY, September 14th and will continue through December 7th, 2020 at 7:00 pm EDT.  Please make time zone adjustments where necessary!

PLEASE NOTE:  The Council of Bishops has decided that no man will be made a Deacon and no Deacon will be ordained a Priest until he has successfully passed Vocational Discernment.  Thank you!
